The City currently employs over 460 full time employees and 300 part time employees. Most positions in Daly City's municipal government are in a Civil Service System; some are not. The City only accepts applications and résumés for positions that are open.

Obtaining an Application
Applications are accepted for any position that we currently have open. You may request an application by contacting the Human Resources Department or apply online at CalOpps.
Submitting Your Application
Applications for most positions have a Final Filing Date (8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday, except holidays). Applications received after the final filing date will not be accepted. Mailed applications must be POSTMARKED no later than the Final Filing Date. Applications postmarked after the Final Filing Date or personally delivered or received via interoffice mail after 5 pm on the Final Filing Date will not be accepted for any reason. Applications submitted online through CalOpps must be submitted before 5 pm on the Final Filing Date.
A separate application must be completed for each examination and must contain a complete record of education, experience, and other information requested with emphasis on any training or experience which fulfills the minimum requirements and is related to the classification concerned.
Résumés are not accepted in lieu of a City application.
Positions with the City have formal Job Descriptions/Duty Statements. The statements indicate the Minimum Qualifications which anyone applying for the position must have. Those minimum qualifications may include education, license(s), and specific kinds and duration of experience. Anyone who screens your application needs to know the hours a week and the number of months you worked with each employer.
When you complete a City application it is critical that you clearly indicate how you meet the minimum experience qualifications. Information on your résumé cannot be substituted for a completed application. If your application shows that you meet the Minimum Qualifications and the position is a Civil Service one, you will get a written notice of when and where to take the written examination.
- Written examination items are generally multiple choice and responses are marked with a pencil on Scantron answer sheets.
- Some positions also require a performance examination such as a typing test or a physical agility test.
- If you pass the written examination, you'll get written notice of when and where to take the oral examination.
- Generally, the short oral examination is conducted by a panel of three examiners who ask each candidate predetermined questions.
- The passing scores from your written and oral examinations are averaged to compute a Final Score. Your name will be ranked on an Employment List. You will be notified in writing of your rank and the life of the list.
- As vacancies occur, a specified number of candidates will be certified in accordance with the Multiple Factor Certification procedure as set forth in the Rules and Regulations of the Classified Service. The names of certified candidates who are interested in being considered for a vacancy will be referred to the department in which the vacant position exists. The appointing authority makes the appointment.
- Employment Lists generally expire after two years from promulgation. An oath of allegiance to the United States and to the State of California must be taken before appointment to any position in the City service.
Recruiting and creating a Civil Service Employment List is a process which may take longer than you expect. Daly City's Human Resources Department is careful to give all job seekers an equal opportunity to be considered for a vacant position with the City. Performance examinations are scored on a pass/fail basis; passing scores on the written and oral examinations are averaged to compute a Final Score. Successful candidates will be placed on the Employment List in rank order of Final Score without showing scores.

Appointment is normally made at the first step of the salary range shown in the Recruitment Bulletin. Thereafter, employees are eligible for merit increases upon completion of each year of satisfactory service, until the maximum step of the salary range is reached.
