Surrendering Firearms & Ammunition for Destruction

The Daly City Police Department is committed to assisting the public in the destruction of potentially dangerous items, such as old or unused ammunition and firearms, that are no longer wanted by the possessor. This service is provided free of charge.

• Smokeless Powder
• Cartridge Primers

Procedure: 

Call the Daly City Police Department non-emergency line (650) 991-8119 or 650-991-1225 and request an officer to respond to your residence or business (within the jurisdiction of the Daly City Police Department) to take possession of the firearm and/or ammunition you wish to surrender. Please provide as much information as possible to the call taker, including the firearm's location and whether the firearm is secured in a case or other gun safety device. Follow the instructions provided by the call taker. Remember, for your safety, do not hand or bring the firearm to an officer when they arrive. Meet the officer outside without the firearm and follow their instructions so we can safely retrieve the firearm.

For everyone’s safety, we prefer that you call ahead if you have an unwanted firearm or ammunition, but if you choose to bring it to the Police Department, please do so during business hours. Transport the firearm in a locked container in the locked trunk of your vehicle. Leave the firearm locked in your vehicle and contact our front office personnel. An officer will collect the firearm from your vehicle.

After collecting the firearm, the officer will provide you with a written receipt and a partially completed CA DOJ BOF 4546 Form. It’s crucial that you complete the remainder of the DOJ BOF 4546 form and submit it to the DOJ. This form notifies the DOJ that you’re no longer in possession of the firearm(s) surrendered and is required by law. Your active participation in this process is greatly appreciated and helps us ensure the safety of our community.
