Free Gun Locks for the Safe Storage of Firearms

The Daly City Police Department promotes the safe storage of firearms in the home by offering free gun locks to Daly City residents. This program raises awareness about firearms safety by distributing educational materials to gun owners and gun locks that render the firearm inoperable when locked. The Daly City Police Department provides responsible gun owners with the tools and information they need to securely store their guns away from unauthorized persons, including children, at-risk individuals, and criminals.

Residents of Daly City can obtain a free gun lock by visiting us at the Daly City Police Department. Anyone who requests a free gun lock will receive it with no questions asked. Do not bring your firearm with you to the police department when requesting the free lock.

Provided locks are intended to be used for at-home storage of firearms. The lock is intended to provide the public with a free, safe, and legal locking device that renders a firearm inoperable when locked. The locks are designed to keep children safe from firearms. They are NOT intended to keep criminal acts, including theft, from occurring.

The lock provided by our department meets the requirements of California law for a type of lock that renders the firearm inoperable when locked.1 The lock does not satisfy the “locked container” requirements for storage set forth by California law.2 The lock also does not meet the requirements of a locked container when a firearm is stored in a car3. The term “locked container” means a secure container fully enclosed and locked by a padlock, keylock, combination lock, or similar locking device. The term “locked container” does not include the utility or glove compartment of a motor vehicle4.
