Water Heater: an appliance designed to supply hot water. A water heater is equipped with automatic controls limiting water temperature to a maximum of 210° Fahrenheit (98.9° Celsius) (California Plumbing Code ((CPC)) 502.13).

Permit Requirements

A plumbing permit is required to install, remove, replace, or raise a water heater (CPC 503.0). A permit must be obtained before beginning the work. Work performed without permit may be subject to investigation or enforcement fees.

Permits to replace tank-type water heaters can be obtained over the counter. Please assure that the replacement unit meets the First Hour Recovery sizing of CPC Table 5-1 (shown on the Water Heater Sizing tab).
